My new TAG for my car

by Rajesh Natarajan

tag.JPG

One good feature I liked in US is the personalisation of TAG (number plates, as we call in India) feature for automobiles. We can have any alphanumeric character upto 7 digits in this TAG for an extra $50 in Alabama. That prompted me to go for this and voila I have my name in the car. There are a lot of choices for the background pictures of the tag. I should feel lucky that I am in one of the state where  there is not much Indian population as in north USA because I dont think my name would have been available with a huge Indian crowd in Northern USA or East/west coasts. My name may have been already picked up by some other Indian there.

There were some plans in India too, early back in September 2001, to implement the feature of Tags being issued by the RTO rather than we printing the numbers ourself (just remembering the Vivek’s comedy in samy where he was carrying 4 numberplates with all color combinations :) ) to avoid confusions and self customisations of number plates. Seems implementation is very tough in India looking at the number of vehicles in the country.

Attitude is Everything!

by Rajesh Natarajan

 attitude.jpg

An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his situation:

Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden because your mother always loved planting time. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren’t in prison.

Love, Dad

Shortly, the old man received this telegram: “For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden!! That’s where I buried the GUNS!!

At 4 a.m. the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns. Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asked him what to do next. His son’s reply was: “Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you from here.”

MORAL: NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE IN THE WORLD, IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DEEP FROM YOUR HEART YOU CAN DO IT. IT IS THE THOUGHT THAT MATTERS NOT WHERE YOU ARE OR WHERE THE PERSON IS.

Amazon’s Mechanical Turk lets you make $$$

by Rajesh Natarajan

At Amazon, anyone with a computer and Internet access can serve as the human intelligence behind all sorts of tasks that computers can’t perform on their own. The Web site promises a way to make easy money: “Complete simple tasks that people do better than computers. And, get paid for it–Choose from thousands of tasks, control when you work, and decide how much you earn.”

I liked the sound of that, so I decided to try it out. There are more than 50,000 hits (thats what they call tasks) available to take for…

First task required me to read a product review and identify product features, for equipment like digital cameras. For 5 cents it was an easy job.

The next task required me to locate e-mail addresses for a group of gyms and health spas, most of which didn’t seem to have a Web site. That one seemed too much like work to me.

Some bigger ticket tasks were: $1 for people who worked at Gold’s Gym or 24 Hour Fitness to answer a short survey; $2 to add numbers to statisitics wiki site Numberpedia.org; 50 cents to write short plot descriptions for movies (“avoid spoilers”); $3 to rewrite articles on cat training; 70 cents to tag stub articles on the African diaspora in Wikipedia; and 75 cents to record your screen and voice as you browse a Web site.

I have just earned 5 cents as below…

Cassette Adapter VS FM transmitters

by Rajesh Natarajan

 VS all FM Transmitters like

For all those cars without an MP3 player and just with a FM radio, it was a hard time to listen to favorite MP3 music. To add to this  problem, there is no way to introduce an external auxillary since most models are factory preset. This was the problem I faced too.

Hence I decided to buy a FM transmitter which get input from an IPod and then broadcast in the FM transmission frequency that I set so that I can tune my car radio to this particular FM frequency. Ever since I started to think of which product to buy, mostly I saw complaints and concerns about the quality of audio that a FM transmitter can give. Many from Metro areas had comments that it was very hard to find a free FM frequency for them to tune it. Also in car movement sometimes the frequency gets jammed with some other local interference thus creating squeaky noises from speaker at times.

Then, I found this Sony cassette Adapter. Fortunately in my corolla I had a tape with the audio system. This cassette adapter has a auxillary input pin which you can plug in to your IPod (literally any audio device) and just insert this cassette in to the audio system as you would do for any other cassette and home audio system. Voila!!! The sound quality was great and I am now able to enjoy hours of my mp3 music from IPod without any interference during travel. This is much much cheaper than the FM transmitter and also does not require any batteries or power like FM transmitters. :)

I would recommend going for a cassette adapter if the car does have a tape ; else there is no other way than FM transmitter :(
